Kayla from Earth - Issue 1 by kuhsor
Kayla from Earth - Issue 1
At long last, my comic book, Kayla from Earth, is done! I was desperately trying to get this done in time for the Edmonton Expo coming up. This is my first comic where I didnt rely on photography or other photo elements to create it. I wrote, drew, inked, and colored the entire thing. Was also a good way for me to track how long it takes from start to finish. I estimate it was around 10 to 11 hours per page - 2 to 3 hours for pencil, 2 to 3 hours for ink, 5 hours for color, and around 30 min a page for lettering!

Anyhoo, hope you guys like it! I'm pretty excited to start issue #2 and carry on this crazy story!

Synopsis
Kayla from Earth is a Sci-Fi Adventure comic book. The ongoing series follows the reluctant Kayla, a young Earth woman, and Zal, a squishy little blue alien, both who are lost in space and desperately trying to get back to their home worlds.

New comic - Kayla from Earth - Work in Progress
A sneak peek at what has completely consumed me for the entire summer - working on a new comic, and in a mad panic to get it done for the Edmonton Expo.

Penciling, inking, scanning, and coloring is running me about 10 hours per page. Only 9 more pages to go! Oh shit, then lettering, layout....errr

Nebula, Thanos, and his Favorite Daughter Gamora by kuhsor

Nebula, Thanos, and his Favorite Daughter Gamora.

So like most people, I saw Guardians of the Galaxy (twice in the theatre!) and loved it. And I really wanted to create an image with Gamora and Nebula, but in a way that was different or unexpected. I recalled the part in the movie where Thanos refers to Gamora as his favorite daughter, so I decided to do a spin on the sibling rivalry theme. I thought this would be a cute way to go about it.

I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. I'm probably most pleased with how I painted the rocks haha.

See if you can spot all the little comic references I threw in too :)

After leaving the College Fine Art program in 1998, I dreamed of becoming a Rock Star & world-famous Painter. I had the image totally realized in my mind; I was going to be living in a huge spacious loft in a down-town New York high-rise, with giant windows and surrounded by enormous 8-foot tall canvases and oil paints. My band would be world famous and I would delve into my art to cope with the overwhelming pressures of being a rock n’ roll celebrity.

Well, luckily for me, I was spared the pressures of becoming a Rock Icon. In 1999 I discovered computers and the wonderful world of Digital Art.

I began my design career back in 2000 creating interactive training modules for the oil and gas industry. By 2004 I was providing Art Direction for a local design company working on everything from web development, promotional print design, to animation. It was at this time I left this job and made the move to a full-time freelance designer. Some notable accomplishments during this time have been creating comics & illustrations for a magazine with a nationwide readership for 8 consecutive years, developing touch-screen poker games for a Las Vegas gaming company, and spearheading the corporate branding and marketing design for an agricultural company with products sold across the globe.

Aside from my regular design work, I also have much of my focus on creative projects combining illustration and photography with a pop-culture flair. I have published a few comic books in this style, teach workshops in digital editing, and exhibit my artwork at various comicons.

Thanks! Well to explain it simply, I'll start with a sketch, then block in solid colors, then do the shading, then add textures and other photo elements for the realism.

I have a bit of a breakdown in this image here:

Hope it helps a bit!
